FAQs about Getting Your Paper Planner Printed Overseas

Have you ever dreamt of creating your own planner? Designed exactly how you like it, from the layout to the luxurious paper? But then sticker shock from local printers hits, and suddenly that dream feels a bit out of reach.

There’s another way! Printing your planner overseas can be a fantastic way to get premium quality at a fraction of the cost. But before you dive headfirst, there are some key questions to consider.

Read on for the FAQs that come up when it comes to overseas printing for custom stationery, paper planners, and other paper goods.

Is it really cheaper to print overseas? What are the minimum order quantities?

Let's face it, overseas printing is attractive because of the potential savings. Especially for larger quantities, the difference can be significant. However, there's often a catch: minimum order quantities. These minimums can be much higher than what local printers offer (we’re talking about some manufacturers having a MOQ (minimum order quantity of 300-500). So, make sure you have a solid plan for selling or distributing your planner before you commit.

Will there be a language barrier? What file format does the printer need? Do they offer design services?

Communication can be a concern when working with overseas companies. The good news is that many reputable printers have English-speaking staff. But it's always a good idea to be as clear and concise as possible in your communication. Double-check file formats (e.g., .ai, .pdf) before sending anything, and be prepared to provide detailed instructions.

Some printers might even offer design services, but this isn't always the case. So, if you're not a design guru, be sure to have your planner print-ready before reaching out.

Another tip: add communication as one of the top qualities to look for when vetting your potential parter. Speed, clarity, understanding on both sides will go far and hopefully help you build a long term relationship with your printer.

Can I get a sample before I order? What kind of paper and printing options are available? How long will shipping take?

My experience has been that all overseas manufacturers offer samples but not all create custom samples. It's definitely worth asking about custom samples though so that you can see your exact vision, design, and idea brought to life. Seeing the paper quality, feeling the printing finish - a physical sample can give you much MUCH needed peace of mind.

Speaking of quality, research the printer's capabilities! Do they offer the paper weight and color options you envision? Can they handle special features like foil stamping or embossing? These are other things to research as you vet potential manufacturers.

How long will shipping take? What about customs?

Depending on where you are and the shipping method chosen, getting your planners from overseas can take time. Factor this into your overall production timeline. I’d suggest about a 6-month lead time when creating a physical planner overseas.

There's also a chance you might encounter import duties or taxes when your planners arrive, but this depend on the type of shipping option you choose. Some manufacturers can handle all logistics for you on their end - which means a higher shipping cost, but you gain the benefit of them taking care of all parts of the shipping, freight, delivery, and customs process. Definitely check with the printer or a customs broker to understand the potential fees involved.

What about quality control? How can I make sure my products are ok and to my liking?

Ask about the printer's quality control procedures. Do they have a system in place to catch errors before printing? This can save you a lot of headaches (and wasted goods) down the line. Are they ok with you hiring a 3rd party inspection company? (Huge red flag if they’re not btw).

It’s so important to get your products inspected before they leave the factory! So ask these questions upfront, before bulk ordering.

With a little research and planning, you can turn your dream planner into a reality, all without breaking the bank.
